Four terraced house complexes are emerging on the landscape of the former limestone quarry of Lahekalda, respecting both their historical and natural context. Our winning entry “Horizont” was based not on simply designing houses, but on creating a holistic living environment where architecture and landscape merge into one harmonious whole.

The heart of the project was the idea of turning the traditionally problematic relief – a 1.3-1.5 meter height difference with street level – into an opportunity. Instead of hiding the topographic uniqueness, we used it as the basis for an architectural narrative. The landscape opening up in front of the houses, together with geometric stairs and embankments, forms the visual calling card of the complex, giving each building its own identity through a sculptural house number.

The stepped 5-8-storey building mass delicately responds to the surrounding natural landscape, ensuring magnificent views of both the sea and the Old Town, as well as the forests of the Viimsi Peninsula. The buildings were positioned on the plots in such a way as to preserve the existing view corridors and ensure privacy for future residents. The underground parking cleverly solved the parking problem, leaving more space on the roof for high-quality landscaping and common areas that connect all four buildings into a common green terrace.
