In the heart of Tallinn’s transport hub, where cars, trains and planes meet, a building is rising that turns traffic chaos into an architectural experience. The winning solution in the architectural competition called Veerenni 38 was born from the challenge of creating a dynamic office building in the midst of intense traffic flow. Our response was a building that does not hide in the environment, but turns its energy into its strength.

The architectural concept was based on creating two volumes with different characters – a clearly defined parking garage follows the strict geometric boundaries of the property, while the soft-formed office volume tells the story of movement. The heart of the dynamic facade lies in the system of sun protection slats, where the slats on each floor are rotated a few degrees relative to each other and painted in two different shades.

COLOR-CHANGING FACADE

The innovation is in the details – the two-tone painting of the slats and their rotation create a constantly changing visual experience depending on the viewing angle. The building “changes color” depending on whether you look at it from the north or south, in the morning or in the evening. This is not just a decorative effect, but a functional solution that protects the building from overheating and provides optimal light for employees.

The 8-story A-class office building, named Ovaal Maja, completed in 2019, has become the first stage of the Ringi Büroode quarter. The three-story parking garage with 200 parking spaces, a car wash and charging points for electric cars show how modern architecture meets the needs of today's mobility. This is architecture that believes that inspiring working environments can be created in every urban space, even in the most intensive transport hubs.
