In the Veerenni district of Tallinn’s city centre, a concept is emerging where apartment buildings are not just living spaces, but small city villas. The Võtme apartments competition entry was based on the question: how to create a diverse urban space where each building is unique, but all form a harmonious whole?
The planned apartment buildings are located on Võtme Street, where Tallinn’s pedestrian network and a safe, comfortable living environment meet. The solution was born from a stepped form that creates privacy – reducing the need to look directly into the neighbouring apartment.
MATERIALS AND IDENTITY
Facade solutions vary: the first combination brings together light-coloured concrete and dark thermal wood, the second combines light thermal wood with dark façade brick. Each building gets its own look, but they all speak the same language. The structure is based on a three-layer concrete element wall, reinforced concrete stairs and beams ensure reliability.
The landscape is solved on two levels. The underground parking lot frees up outdoor space for pedestrians and the community. The terraces created on the roof of the parking lot are designed with planters, benches and greenhouses - places where residents can come together or grow something in planters.
The villas in Võtme create a diverse urban space, where each apartment is individual and the community finds places to gather.
