In the landscape of Hiiumaa, where the sea meets the sky and the wind shapes both nature and culture, we faced a challenge: how to create a building that can be both stormy and quiet, both monumental and humanly accessible? The architecture of the wind tower had to tell the story of the island, but at the same time offer a modern experiential experience.
Our solution was based on creating a dialogue between nature and architecture. The outer shell of the building – a perforated pattern of galvanized metal plates – is constantly changing under the influence of wind and light. During the day, light and shadow play through the pattern, and in the evening the building becomes a luminous beacon from within. The facade is not just a protective shell, but a living surface that breathes with nature.
Inside, every detail tells the story of the sea and wind. The warm texture of the wood balances the coolness of the metal, and the open plan allows visitors to move freely like a sea breeze in the landscape. Images of the island’s nature and history change in the window frames, making the architecture part of a larger narrative.
The result is a building that functions as both a house for the sea and the heart of the island – a place where architecture does not compete with nature, but gives it voice and form.
